Highway 34 Construction Updates

Highway 34 Construction Information Overview
Mar. 29, 2007.

The Highway 34 Construction Project has been divided into four stages. It is anticipated to take 120 working days in 2007 and 20 days in 2008 for finish work.

It is anticipated that two-way traffic, one east and one westbound lane, will be allowed to travel through the area during most of the construction.

If a detour is necessary during construction, traffic coming into Creston from the east will be diverted to Osage Street onto Townline Street and then to Sumner Avenue and back onto Hwy 34.

For traffic coming into Creston from the west the detour will begin at Sumner Avenue to Townline Street to Osage Street and back onto Hwy 34.

The Contractors and DOT will try to inform businesses and homeowners along Hwy 34 a week ahead of time before a shutdown of the Highway occurs. There may be times when a week notice is not possible, however. The contractors anticipate that the length of the shutdowns will be from 3 to 5 days.

During construction the following intersections will be open to one-way traffic unless construction is taking place at that particular intersection. The intersections that will be open are Sumner, Wyoming, Division, Elm, Walnut, Cherry, Mulberry and Cedar.

The first stage – 1a, and where the project will begin on April 3 is the south two lanes just west of Laurel Street going to Smith Street.  As work advances the next area impacted will be 1 – the south two lanes by Hardee’s going to Pine Street.

The second stage of the project will be – 1b,  the south two lanes from Smith Street to Cromwell Road and 2 – the south two lanes from Pine Street to Chestnut Street.

The third stage will include 2a – the north two lanes from west of Laurel Street to Smith and – 3, the north two lanes by Hardee’s going to Pine Street.

The fourth stage will include 2b – the north two lanes from Smith to Cromwell Road and 4 – the north two lanes from Pine Street to Chestnut Street.

Any questions should be directed to the local DOT Office in Creston – 641-782-4518.

Update from Creston DOT Office
March 29, 2007

There will be no lane closures on Monday April 2, the contractors will be mobilizing that day.  First thing Tuesday morning we will be closing the right (N) lane of westbound (WB) US 34 from the beginning of the project east to the new pavement in front of the old Wal-Mart building (West Section) for milling and resurfacing.

This is expected to last until about Noon on Wednesday, April 4th.  At that time we will begin the to close Phase 1a, the two eastbound (EB) lanes and move traffic over to the WB lanes using head to head traffic in the north lanes.  Construction will include pavement removal and sanitary sewer work.
